Introduction
NOTE: This post is only applicable to prospective students under the Georgia Tech Conditional Transfer Program.
Congratulations on your conditional acceptance to Georgia Tech!
Many students transfer to GT through the conditional pathway program, which requires them to complete specific coursework before enrolling. While this pathway provides a valuable opportunity, the process of aligning classes with transfer requirements can be confusing and stressful. In some cases, courses taken in high school or at previous institutions may not count for Georgia Tech credit, requiring students to retake classes. This can create additional academic and financial pressure, as well as uncertainty about whether requirements are being met correctly.
Our guide outlines clear steps and resources to help conditional transfer students like you understand credit policies, course equivalencies, and transfer requirements before arriving at Georgia Tech. We also recommend structured advising support specifically for you to ensure a smoother transition. Our goal is to reduce confusion, prevent unnecessary retakes, and make the transfer experience more manageable and transparent so you can hit the ground running….or should we say, buzzing!

Step 1: Understand Your Conditional Pathway General Requirements
Once you decide that you are committed to following in your family member’s footsteps and starting the Conditional Pathway process, click on the letter or go to the Georgia Tech transfer webpage and find the Conditional Pathway Section. This will lead you to the general requirements.
The general requirements that apply for each major will show:
- Minimum GPA required (3.5)
- Minimum credit hours (30 semester hours)
- Course categories you must take regardless of major (2 English classes and one class in Differential Calculus)
If you are expected to receive the Conditional Pathway Program letter but did not receive an email, contact the admissions office immediately. You may have qualified for a different transfer pathway, as this pathway is for prospective students with family who have graduated from Georgia Tech.
Step 2: Identify Your Intended Georgia Tech Major
Once you have gathered the general requirements, choose which major you are applying for. Keep in mind that some majors require classes with prerequisites from high school, so choose accordingly. Also, most STEM majors require specific lab sciences, and some need to be taken in sequence, so make sure you take note of that. Here is a link to the list of Georgia Tech majors: link.
To find the requirements, look under “Pathway Requirements” in the Conditional Pathway page and click on a button that says “Course Requirements by Major”. You should see a detailed chart of everything you need (refer to the bottom of the page to see the chart).
Step 3: Use the Georgia Tech Transfer Credit Database
A common problem people have had during this process is finding out that the classes they enrolled in do not actually transfer over to Georgia Tech. A common reason this occurs is because the material doesn’t align with Georgia Tech’s standards. A transfer equivalency table can be found under the Conditional Pathway page (link here*), or if you simply search “Georgia Tech Transfer Equivalency Table” into a web browser. There are scenarios where the course is not listed on the equivalency table, but it is still accepted. This will be covered in a later step.
*Note the attached link leads to GT Transfer Credit page, from which you can access each transfer equivalency table you need. The site includes that of Advanced Placement (AP) exam, International Baccalaureate (IB) exam, SAT II exam scores, as well as valid MATH.

Step 4: Plan Your First-Year Course Schedule
It is very important to plan out your whole school-year schedule, not just for the semester, as this helps space out the work and determine if any prerequisites are needed for a class you would like to take. Also, it is important to take the bare minimum amount of classes that are not required. Doing so ensures you have the best chance of exceeding the minimum required 3.5 GPA. The main idea is making sure you have the general Conditional Pathway requirements and specific major requirements.
A potential method for this is making a course scheduler! You can use resources like Google Sheets or Excel, and list out what courses you take, your overall grade after completion, and resulting GPA. Below is a template you can use for inspiration.

Step 5: Confirm Courses with Advisors
This is a major obstacle to overcome in the transfer process. No place explicitly tells you where to seek advice on the process, which can make the whole process confusing and more stressful. However, by contacting the admissions office, they can give you valuable contacts to reach out to. These people will walk you through the process, verify your classes are transferable, and answer any other questions you may have. This is a very important part of the process and helps keep you on the right track.
When in contact with an advisor, make sure you share as much information about your academic goals and plans as possible. List out the major you hope to become after you transfer, the courses that you would like to take at your current institution, and other applicable information. This can make the communication process smoother and help to ensure you are getting advise that best applies to your plan from your advisor.
Step 6: Track Your GPA and Completed Credits
As the semester goes on, it is important to make sure you are staying above a 3.5 GPA. After your semester ends, verify which course requirements you have completed and make sure you enroll in the rest of the course requirements for the next semester. Note that planning early and checking requirements repetitively reduces risk of missing a requirement.

Step 7: Finalize Your Transfer Application
Once March comes around, you will be able to begin and submit the transfer application. Confirm all of your transfer requirements have been completed (which can be found on the Transfer Course Requirements page) or are on track to be completed, send in your transcript, and fill out any other necessary information. Also, again, reach out to the admissions office for any questions you may have. Note that it is always best to begin this process as soon as the application window opens, as you may be able to address an issues or questions if they arise earlier in the window, which makes for a less stressful experience.
