The first step into Atlanta is a step into a fresh city with many undiscovered treasures. When GT students come to the campus, they naturally explore the institution through academic courses, clubs, and activities. However, there is more than the campus life GT provides for its students; it’s an immersive city life and the Atlanta culture that are available for the students to discover. This is an uneasy task as there is no main quest that leads the student through the city in one trip, gems are hidden, and there are places that are dangerous to explore. GT student body is rather diverse, students come from instate, out of state, and international backgrounds, experiencing different environments when they grew up. This diversity creates a wide variance in how students engage with Atlanta and what they feel comfortable exploring within their trips. Therefore, we would like to provide a guide to help one get familiar with Georgia Tech and explore Atlanta, giving advice on how to safely explore the city, such as telling them which streets not to cross, as well as recommendations of places from our experience that they could enjoy for activities and spending time with friends. Our goal is to ensure that GT students could experience the true essence of Atlanta happily and safely.

Step 1: Find your peoples first

Before exploring the Atlanta, you need a crew. Walking around in the city alone is dangerous, and number is a safety rule. Fortunately, there’s more ways of meeting new people; Georgia Tech consists of over 500 clubs that can be found on the Engage platform. Whether you’re looking to learn new skills, enjoy a hobby, or simply find your ‘people’, these clubs are where you can build your college experience. You can bond with your friends in these clubs.

Step 2: Learn about the different academic opportunities and pick the ones you are interested in

Once you’ve found a group of friends you enjoy hanging out with, it’s worth taking a look at Georgia Tech’s academic opportunities. These activities are great to learn new skills and apply the skills you have learn from your courses. For instance, the campus hosts several hackathons throughout the year where you can team up to build creative projects under time constraint environments. They’re perfect for applying your skills and learning new skills to solve real-world problems. Moreover, you could also participate in research by reaching out to professors or graduate students in a field that interests you. Many labs are happy to have motivated individuals to help them out, and you’ll gain valuable experiences in those advanced topics.

Step 3: Experience a Sports Game and get involved with School Spirit

Atlanta is a dream city for fans of every sport, offering students the opportunity to engage with both professional and collegiate athletics. Students can start by cheering on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at the Bobby Dodd Stadium where they will learn new chants and get involved with school spirit. Beyond college sports, students can choose to attend a NFL or NBA game only a short distance from campus. Atlanta also hosts big soccer games, and is one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Attending one of these diverse sports events is a great way for students to get away from academics and connect with Atlanta’s vibrant sports culture.
